What gates are, which types exist and what happens if you don't accept one.

When you send a Standard submission to a curator's playlist, the curator can add a gate to it in return for considering and reviewing your song. A gate is a small action you are asked to complete before your submission to that curator is sent. You don't have to complete it, but some curators use gates, and they can vary from playlist to playlist.

When do gates apply?

  • Gates are only used on Standard submissions. Standard submissions are free, and in return the curator can ask for a small action, such as a follow.

  • Premium submissions never have gates, because you pay for them.

  • Not every playlist has a gate. Each curator decides whether to use one.

  • You see the gate before you submit, so you always know what is asked.

Types of gates

  • Follow: follow the curator or their playlist on Spotify.

  • Save: save a specific track on Spotify.

  • Newsletter: join the curator's newsletter. You see a checkbox before submitting. By ticking it, you agree to receive news and updates from that curator at the email address linked to your Spotify account.

Do I have to accept a gate?

No. Gates are optional. If you don't accept a gate, the submission to that curator is not completed, but you can still submit to all other curators and their playlists.

Do gates affect my Standard credits?

It depends on whether the submission is completed:

  • If you accept the gate and complete the submission, one Standard credit is used.

  • If you don't accept the gate, the submission is not sent and no credit is used.

Is my email address visible to curators?

Only if you accept a newsletter gate. In that case, your email address is added to that curator's newsletter list through a Mailchimp integration. Otherwise, your email address is not visible to curators or other users.

Why do gates exist?

Gates help curators grow their playlists and connect with artists who engage with their music. They are part of keeping DailyPlaylists fair for both artists and curators.
